From Old Indo-Aryan *pōḍ ʻ burn ʼ. [Cf. pauli -- and Pk. paü(l)laï ʻ cooks ʼ, paüliya -- ʻ cooked, burnt ʼ, appaüliya -- , appōli -- ʻ uncooked fruit cake ʼ]. Compare Bengali পোড়া (poṛa, to burn)[1]
