Sanskrit

Etymology

From Proto-Indo-Aryan *sáynaH, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *sáynaH. Cognate with Avestan 𐬵𐬀𐬉𐬥𐬁 (haēnā, hostile army), Old Persian 𐏃𐎡𐎴𐎠 (hainā, hostile army).

According to native grammarians, the sense "missile" is from the root सि (√si, to hurl, cast). Compare सायक (sā́yaka).
