Cognate with Avestan 𐬵𐬀𐬞𐬀𐬚𐬥𐬍‎ (hapaθnī, “co-wife”), Pashto بن‎ (bën). Synchronically analyzable as स- (sa-, copulative prefix) + पत्नी (pátnī, “mistress, wife”).
