From रण् (raṇ), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ran- (“pleasure, joy”). Cognate with Avestan 𐬭𐬁𐬥𐬌𐬌𐬋-𐬯𐬐𐬆𐬭𐬆𐬌𐬙𐬌 (rāniiō-skərəiti, “dispensing joy”), Middle Persian r'n (“refreshment”).

From Proto-Indo-Iranian *ránam (“battle”), derived from the sense "joy" above. Cognate with Avestan 𐬭𐬇𐬥𐬀 (rə̄na, “battle, fight”), Parthian rān (“to battle”).
