From Proto-Indo-European *reg- (to dye).

Cognate with Proto-Iranian *ra(n)ǰ- (to colour, dye) whence Persian رخش (rakhsh, red), Chorasmian rxtk (raxtak, red), Mazanderani رش (raš, red (of cattle)), Kurdish reş (black) and Sogdian [script needed] (rɣš- /raxš/, Rakhsh).
