From Proto-Indo-European *reg- (“to dye”).

Cognate with Proto-Iranian *ra(n)ǰ- (“to colour, dye”) whence Persian ‎ (rakhsh, “red”), Chorasmian ‎ (raxtak, “red”), Mazanderani رش‎ (raš, “red (of cattle)”), Kurdish reş (“black”) and Sogdian [script needed] (rɣš- /raxš/, “Rakhsh”).
