From Proto-Indo-Aryan *yugám, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *yugám (compare Avestan 𐬫𐬎𐬎𐬀 (yuua), Persian یوغ (ǰuɣ)), from Proto-Indo-European *yugóm. Cognate with Ancient Greek ζυγόν (zugón), Latvian jūgs, Old Church Slavonic иго (igo), Latin iugum, Old English ġeoc (whence English yoke).
