From Old Marathi 𑘕𑘰𑘐𑘜𑘹𑘽 (jāgaṇeṁ), Maharastri Prakrit 𑀚𑀕𑁆𑀕𑀇 (jaggaï), from Sanskrit जाग्रति (jāgrati) (compare जागर्ति (jāgarti)), from Proto-Indo-European *h₁ger-. Cognate with Konkani जाग्चे (zāgce), Gujarati જાગવું (jāgvũ), Hindi जागना (jāgnā), Sindhi جَاڳَڻُ / जाॻणु (jāɡ̈aṇu), Punjabi ਜਾਗਣਾ (jāgṇā) / جاگنا (jāgnā), Nepali जाग्नु (jāgnu), Bengali জাগা (jaga), Assamese জাগা (zaga).
