From Old Marathi 𑘐𑘯𑘜𑘹 (gaḷaṇe), from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀕𑀮𑀇 (galaï), from Sanskrit गलति (gálati), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *gálati, from Proto-Indo-European *gʷél-e-ti, from *gʷel- (to drip, dribble, ooze, flow). Cognate with Konkani गळ्चे (gaḷce), Gujarati ગળવું (gaḷvũ), Hindi गलना (galnā), Sindhi ڳَرَڻُ / ॻरणु, Oriya ଗଳିବା (gôḷiba), Assamese গলা (gola), Sinhalese ගලනවා (galanavā).
