Etymology 1

From Proto-Indo-Aryan *gẓʰā́s, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ĵžʰā́s, from Proto-Indo-European *dʰéǵʰōm. Cognate with Avestan 𐬰𐬀𐬨‎ (zam), Latin humus, Ancient Greek χθών (khthṓn), Persian زمین‎ (zamīn). The presence of j in the genitive, such as ज्मः (jmáḥ, genitive) alongside क्ष्मः (kṣmáḥ) might suggest an earlier Rigvedic jhẓám before the loss of voiced sibilants and the standardization of the thorn clusters to kṣ.
