From Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀓𑀼𑀢𑁆𑀢 (kutta, “dog”), from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀓𑀼𑀢𑁆𑀢 (*kutta) which is possibly from Proto-Indo-Aryan *kúttas, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *kúttas (compare Proto-Iranian *kútah), possibly of onomatopoeic origin, which could imply a Wanderwort instead of inheritance from Proto-Indo-Iranian. Compare Sanskrit कुर्कुर (kurkura), कुक्कुर (kukkura), perhaps also onomatopoeic.
