From Old Marathi कछ (kacha), कछप (kachap), from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀓𑀘𑁆𑀙𑀯 (kacchava), from Sanskrit कच्छप (kacchapa). Cognate to Hindi कछुआ (kachuā) and Konkani कासवु.
