From ܥܒܕܐ (ʿaḇdā(ʾ), slave), from the root ܥ-ܒ-ܕ (ʿ-b-d) related to working, from Proto-Semitic *ʿabd- + the abstract noun ending -ܘܬܐ (-ūṯāʾ). Compare Hebrew עַבְדוּת (ʿaḇəḏûṯ).
