From the root ܕ-ܡ-ܐ (d-m-ʾ); ultimately from Proto-Semitic *dam- (blood; by extension blood price, compensation for wrongful slaying). Compare Akkadian 𒁕𒈬 (/damu/, blood price, monetary compensation, literally blood) and Hebrew דָּמִים (dāmîm); .
