From ܓܙܪܬܐ (gāzartāʾ, “island”), from the root ܓ-ܙ-ܪ (ɡ-z-r) related to cutting off + ܝܒܫܢܝܬܐ (yaḇšānāytāʾ), feminine form of ܝܒܫܢܝܐ (yaḇšānāyāʾ, “terrestrial”), from the root ܝ-ܒ-ܫ (y-b-š) related to dryness.
