Etymology

From Middle Persian OBYDWN-tn’, krtn’ (kardan), from Old Persian [script needed] (kar-, to do, make, build), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *kar- (to do, make), from Proto-Indo-European *kʷer- (to do, make, construct). Modern Indo-Iranian cognates include Ossetian кӕнын (kænyn), конд (kond), Pashto کول (kawël, krël), Baluchi [script needed] (kan-, ku(r)t-), Northern Kurdish kirin / кьрьн (kirin), кь- (ki-), Zazaki [Term?] (kerdiš, ken-), and Hindustani करना (karnā) / کرنا (karnā).

The generic root for "to do, make" has developed in a wide range of specific activities, which have been preserved in old derivations such as: سگالیدن (segâlidan, to think, meditate), پیکار (peykâr, picture, statue), نگاشتن (negâštan, to paint), انگاشتن (engâštan, to suppose; believe, consider), انگاریدن (angâridan, to think, imagine; paint, figure).
