From Middle Persian hcʾl (hazār) (Manichaean Middle Persian hzʾr), from Iranian *hazahrā, from Proto-Indo-European *(sm̥-)ǵʰéslo-. Indo-Iranian cognates include Pashto زر (zër), Baluchi ہزار (hazár), Kurdish ههزار (hazār), Ossetian æрзæ (ærzæ), and Sanskrit सहस्र (sa-hásra). Akin to Old Armenian հազար (hazar), a Middle Iranian borrowing.
