from the root ن ب و (n-b-w), however not directly related to the formations thereof but borrowed from Aramaic נְבִיָּא (n'ḇiyyā) (absolutive form: נְבִי (n'ḇī)) the root of which is cognate to the Arabic root ن ب ء (n-b-ʾ). Compare Hebrew נָבִיא (naví).
