From Proto-Semitic, related to the root ص ف ح‎ (ṣ-f-ḥ). Akin to Ge'ez ጻሕል (ṣaḥl, “bowl, jar, pan”), Hebrew צֵלָחָת‎ (selāḥāṯ, “pot”), Hebrew צַלַּחַת‎ (sallaḥáṯ, “dish, bowl”), Aramaic צְלֹוחִיתָא‎ / ܨܠ݀ܿܘܚܺܝܬܐ‎ (ṣlōẖīṯā, “jar”).
