From Aramaic רִיטְלָא /‎ ܪܺܝܛܠܳܐ (rīṭlā), earlier לִיטְרָא /‎ ܠܺܝܛܪܳܐ (līṭrā), from Ancient Greek λίτρα (lítra). Doublet of لِتْر (litr), a later French loanword.
