Etymology

From Aramaic רְוָוקָא‎ (rəwōqā, “strainer”) from רוֹק‎ (rōq, “to pour out”), because wine was poured through the strainer. Meanings of the Arabic root ر و ق‎ (r-w-q) “to filter” are from this noun.
