Arabic

Pronunciation

  • (Egypt) IPA(key): /deːr/

Etymology 1

Borrowed from Classical Syriac ܕܝܪܐ (dayrā) which generally means “dwelling” and specifically “cloister”, from the Syriac root ܕ-ܘ-ܪ (d-w-r) relating to dwelling. Not from the Arabic root د و ر (d-w-r) as this means “spinning” and does not fit semantically.

دَيْر (dayr) m (plural أَدْيَار (ʾadyār) or أَدْيِرَة (ʾadyira) or دُيُورَة (duyūra))

  1. monastery, convent, cloister
