Etymology

From Arabic أَهْوَاز (ʾahwāz), a shortened form of سُوق الْأَهْوَاز (sūq al-ʾahwāz), a calque of Middle Persian Hūǰestān-wāzār (literally the market of Khuzestan), name of a major town in Sassanian-era. The word is the broken-plural form of Middle Persian hwc (Hūz).
