From Persian اهواز (Ahvâz), from Arabic أَهْوَاز (ʾahwāz) and اَلْأَهْوَاز (al-ʾahwāz), a shortened form of سُوق الْأَهْوَاز (sūq al-ʾahwāz), a calque of Middle Persian Hūǰestān-vāčār (literally the market of Khuzestan), name of a major town in Sassanian-era Khuzestan; see Khuzestan for more.
