From Persian هند‎ (hend), from Old Persian 𐏃𐎡𐎯𐎢𐏁 (hindūš), from Sanskrit सिन्धु (sindhu, “a river, stream”). It's one of the Arabic country names which require the definite article اَل‎ (al-).
