Uncertain. Possibly from the trilateral root ب ل س‎ (b-l-s) with the general meaning of “despair”, بَلَسَ‎ (balasa). Alternatively theorized to come from Ancient Greek διάβολος (diábolos, “devil, accuser, slanderer”).
