From the root ש־ב־ל (sh-b-l). Cognate with Akkadian 𒋗𒁍𒌌𒋾 (šubulta, ear of wheat), Arabic سَبَلَة (sabala) and Aramaic שׁוּבַּלְתָּא/שִׁבַּלְתָּא (šubbaltā/šibbaltā).
