Ultimately from Arabic زَرَافَة‎ (zarāfa), further etymology is disputed. Perhaps from Persian ‎ (zurnāpā, “giraffe”), a compound of ‎ (zurnā, “flute, zurna”) and ‎ (pā, “leg”), or from Classical Syriac ܙܵܪܝܼܦܵܐ‎ (zarāfa).
