Etymology 2

The original spelling is մաւր (mawr). Usually connected with Proto-Balto-Slavic *mauˀras and derived from the Proto-Indo-European root *mewH- (to make wet, wash). However, Martirosyan links մաւր (mawr), մուր (mur, soot) and Proto-Balto-Slavic *mauˀras and prefers a European substrate origin for them. An alternative etymology derives մաւր (mawr) from Proto-Indo-European *móri (sea), but this is less likely. Nevertheless, a conflation of these two etyma in Armenian is possible. For -ատ (-at), found in the forms with a dental suffixal element, Martirosyan compares the pair արմն (armn) : արմատ (armat). See also Murat.
