Alternative forms

  • խեց (xecʿ)

Etymology

The origin is uncertain. Martirosyan suggests derivation from Proto-Indo-European *pelḱ-sk- or *pelḱs with Old English felg (English felloe) as a cognate. Alternatively, connected with խեց (xecʿ, pot; shell (of molluscs, etc.)), if the basic meaning of the latter was ‘turning, twisting’.
