Etymology

An Iranian borrowing. Compare Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (klmyr /karmīr/, red, crimson), Sogdian [script needed] (krmʾyr /karmīr, kərmīr/, red), Sanskrit किर्मीर (kirmīra, a variegated color) and Hebrew כרמיל (karmīl, crimson, carmine), an Iranian borrowing. Ultimately from Proto-Indo-Iranian *kŕ̥miš (worm). Compare որդան կարմիր (ordan karmir).
