Etymology

From Middle Iranian *tāg, possibly via Aramaic תגא (tāgā), to account for թ- (tʿ-) instead of expected տ- (t-). Compare Persian تاج (tâj) and the second component in Parthian 𐫟𐫀𐫡𐫤𐫀𐫃 (xʾrtʾg /xārtāg/, crown of thorns).
