Etymology

According to Martirosyan, borrowed from Iranian *bōr- (brown, multicoloured) + -ենի (-eni, fur/skin suffix).[1] Compare Middle Persian bwl (bōr, reddish-brown, bay, chestnut (horse)), Northern Kurdish bor (grey), Persian بور (bur); see there for more. The original meaning of բորենի (boreni) may have been “fur of hyena”. See also բոր (bor), բորեկ (borek).

On the other hand, Ačaṙyan derives from the o-grade of Proto-Indo-European *bʰer- (brown), whence Lithuanian bė́ras (brown), Proto-Germanic *brūnaz (brown), *berô (bear), Proto-Indo-European *bʰébʰrus (beaver).[2][3]
