Possibly from Proto-Indo-European *bʰn̥ǵʰu-, with cognates including Sanskrit बहु (bahu, much), Avestan 𐬠𐬄𐬰𐬀𐬵 (bązah, high, deep), Ancient Greek παχύς (pakhús, thick), Latvian bìezs (thick). Otherwise, an Iranian borrowing.
