Borrowed from Middle Median *arōδ, from Proto-Iranian *rawdiš (“copper; bronze”). Cognate with Parthian 𐫡𐫇𐫔 (rwδ /rōδ/), Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (lwd /rōy/), Manichaean Middle Persian 𐫡𐫇𐫏 (rwy /rōy/), Persian روی (rōy, “antimony, copper”), Baluchi رود (rōd, “copper”) and Sogdian 𐫡𐫇𐫔 (rwδ /rōδ/, “copper”).
