Etymology

A Middle Iranian borrowing; compare Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (ʾpwlyt), 𐫀𐫛𐫇𐫡𐫏𐫅 (ʾpwryd /appurēd/, to steal, carry off). Ačaṙean explains the Iranian formation as *apa- (away) + *par- (to pass), comparing Avestan 𐬥𐬌-𐬞𐬁𐬭𐬀𐬌𐬌𐬈𐬌𐬙𐬌 (ni-pāraiieiti, to appropriate something) and Sanskrit अपपरे (apa-pare, to go off). Note also dialectal Turkish aparmak (to take away).
