From Middle Median *axšēn, from Proto-Iranian *xšaHiθniH (whence Ossetian ӕхсин (æxsin, lady, mistress)), from *xšáHyeti (to rule) Alternatively from the homonym *xšayθniH (shining, magnificent, splendid), from *xšáytah (shining), whence also Old Armenian աշխէտ (ašxēt), Ossetian ӕхсид (æxsid, dawn).
