From Proto-Turkic *guńaĺ (“the sun, solar heat”).
Cognate with Old Uyghur [script needed] (qujaš, “solar heat”)[1]; Tatar кояш (qoyaş, “the sun”), Nogai кыяс (kıyas), Karakalpak quyas, Uzbek quyosh, Shor қуяш (quyaš), Karaim къуяш (quyaš), Northern Altai куяш (quyaš), Uzbek quyosh (“the sun”), Yakut куйаас (kuyaas, “heat”).
