Etymology

From Old East Slavic съкати (sŭkati, to twist), from Proto-Slavic *sъkati. Cognate with Old Czech skáti (1sg. sku), and with сука́ть (sukátʹ), сучи́ть (sučítʹ). Further cognate with Lithuanian sùkti (to twist) (1sg. sukù), Latvian sukt, and possibly with Latin sucula (winch, reel).
