From Old East Slavic воротити (vorotiti), from Proto-Slavic *vortiti. Doublet of -врати́ть (-vratítʹ), a borrowing from Old Church Slavonic вратити (vratiti) (cf. возврати́ть (vozvratítʹ), изврати́ть (izvratítʹ), отврати́ть (otvratítʹ), соврати́ть (sovratítʹ)).

Cognate to верте́ть (vertétʹ), враща́ть (vraščátʹ), воро́чать (voróčatʹ) / вороча́ть (voročátʹ).
