From Proto-Slavic *volsъ. Doublet of влас (vlas), a borrowing from Old Church Slavonic.

Cognates with Old Persian (vars), Persian گرس‎ (gurs, “curled hair”), Kurdish pirç (“hair”) and Lithuanian valaĩ, Sanskrit वल्श (válśa, “twig, sprout). Akin to Old Armenian վարս (vars), an Iranian borrowing.
