From Middle Persian wls (wars, hair), from Proto-Indo-European. Cognate with Sanskrit वल्श (válśa, twig, sprout) and Proto-Slavic *volsъ (hair). Akin to Old Armenian վարս (vars) and վարշամակ (varšamak), Iranian borrowings.
