Serbo-Croatian

FWOTD – 25 December 2017

Etymology

Literally, “Christ is born”.

Pronunciation

IPA(key): [ˈxɾistos se ˈɾôdiː]

Phrase

Христос се роди (Latin spelling Hristos se rodi)

  1. (Serbia) Merry Christmas (greeting)
    • 1986, Гласник Етнографског музеја у Београду [Bulletin of the Ethnographic Museum of Belgrade], Vol. 50, p. 255:
Кад се са неким пољуби, обавезно изговори: „Мир божи, нека буде срећан Божић, Христос се роди“, а онај са којим се љуби одговара: „Ваистину се роди!“ Полажајник затим дарује бадњак новцем, и то обично сребрним.
When you and someone else have kissed each other, without fail say: “The peace of God [be with you], may your Christmas be happy, Christ is born”, and he whom you kiss replies: “Indeed he is born!” The one who has come first into the house then endows the Yule log with money, and this usually of silver.
