Borrowed from Ukrainian Голодомо́р (Holodomór), derived from Ukrainian мори́ти го́лодом (morýty hólodom, “to kill by starvation”). Compare го́лод (gólod, “hunger”) and мор (mor, “plague, pestilence”), мори́ть (morítʹ, “to kill, to exterminate”).
