From Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰéyōm. Cognate with χεῖμα (kheîma, snow) and χειμών (kheimṓn, winter), Latin hiems, Welsh gaeaf, Sanskrit हिम (himá), Hittite 𒄀𒈠𒀭 (gimax), Armenian ձմեռ (jmeṙ), Proto-Slavic *zima.

Usage notes

Sometimes with long (ī) for the sake of meter.
