Etymology

From χαμαί (khamaí, on the ground) + λέων (léōn, lion); ultimately a calque of Akkadian 𒌨𒈤𒊭𒆠 (nēšu ša qaqqari, chameleon, reptile, literally lion of the ground", "predator that crawls upon the ground).
