From Proto-Hellenic *kʷʰtʰítis, from Proto-Indo-European *dʰgʷʰítis (perishing, decrease). Cognates include Sanskrit क्षिति (kṣíti, perishing, downfall) and Latin sitis (thirst). Synchronically analysable as φθίω (phthíō) + -σις (-sis).
