φάσκωλος

Ancient Greek

Alternative forms

  • φάσκωλον (pháskōlon)

Etymology

It seems formally evident to connect φάσκος (pháskos), in which case the bag would have denominated after a skin from which the hairs have not been removed. Pokorny connects also βάσκιοι (báskioi, bundles of dry wood). A Pre-Greek origin seems probable.
