Etymology

From Byzantine Greek σφυρίζω from the Ancient Greek σῡρίζω (sūrízō, play the σῦριγξ ("pipe"); make whistling, hissing sound). The development of the [f][1], posssibly under the influence of the Hellenistic σφῠρίον (sphuríon, mallet).[2]
