From Old Aramaic שושמא (šūššmā), shortening of שומשומא (šumššemā), from Akkadian 𒃻𒈦𒌑𒈬 (/šamaššammū/), 𒊭𒈦𒌑𒈨 (/šamaššammi/, literally oil plant), compound of 𒉌 (/šaman/, oil) and 𒌑 (/šammu/, plant).
