Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *méh₁tis (measurement), from Proto-Indo-European *meh₁- (to measure). Cognate with Old English mǣþ. Apparently an Aeolic or Doric form, as the Attic-Ionic form would have been *μῆσις (*mêsis).
